How Balancing Beads Work

Unlike stick-on or clip-on wheel weights, balancing beads sit loose inside the tire and constantly redistribute themselves to counter imbalance wherever it happens to be, at any speed and as the tire wears. Add too few and the tire stays out of balance; add too many and you're just carrying dead weight around the wheel without any extra benefit, so getting the amount right actually matters, not just as a rough guess.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter the combined weight of the tire and wheel — most passenger car tires and wheels land somewhere between 35 and 55 lb combined, light truck and SUV setups run 55–90 lb, and motorcycle tires are usually under 20 lb. If you don't know the exact weight, a shop scale at any tire store will give you an accurate figure in seconds.

How We Calculate It

The industry rule of thumb, used by bead manufacturers like Counteract and Magnum, is 1 ounce of beads for every 13 lb of tire-and-wheel weight. A 65 lb tire-and-wheel combo needs 65 ÷ 13 = 5.0 oz of beads. This lines up with the typical published ranges: 1–3 oz for motorcycle tires, 4–6 oz for standard light truck tires, and 8–10 oz for large 4x4 tires.

A Few Notes

This is a general rule of thumb, not a substitute for a manufacturer's tire-size-specific application chart — mud-terrain tread patterns, dual rear wheels, and unusually heavy off-road wheels can all shift the ideal amount up from what this formula suggests. Beads also aren't a fix for an out-of-round tire, a bent wheel, or a mechanical vibration issue elsewhere in the drivetrain, so if your vehicle is still shaking after balancing, the cause is probably somewhere else.
