Why Fabric Count Changes Everything

The same cross stitch chart turns into wildly different physical sizes depending on what Aida count you stitch it on, because "count" means stitches per inch — a 100-stitch-wide design comes out about 9 inches wide on 11-count fabric but shrinks to roughly 4.5 inches on 22-count. Cut fabric based on the wrong count, or forget the margin you need for framing or finishing, and you either run out of fabric mid-project or end up with barely enough edge to mount it.

How to Use This Calculator

Your chart or pattern will list the design size in stitches wide by stitches tall — enter those two numbers, pick the count of the Aida fabric you're stitching on, and set your margin (how much blank fabric you want on every side beyond the stitched area). Three inches per side is a common default that leaves enough for hooping, framing, or finishing into a pillow or ornament; increase it if your finishing method needs more.

How We Calculate It

Finished design size in inches is stitch count divided by fabric count — a 100-stitch-wide design on 14-count Aida is 100 ÷ 14, or about 7.14 inches wide. The fabric you need to cut adds your margin to both sides of that: cut width = design width + (margin × 2), and the same for height. At 14-count with a 3-inch margin, a 100×80-stitch design needs a finished design area of about 7.14" × 5.71", cut on a piece of fabric roughly 13.14" × 11.71".

A Few Notes

This calculates the stitched area itself, not backstitch or specialty stitches that sometimes extend slightly beyond the grid, and it assumes standard 1-strand-per-Aida-square stitching rather than fractional or over-one-on-evenweave techniques, which change the math. Always round your cut size up to the nearest half or full inch, and check your fabric's edges for fraying before you commit — most stitchers zigzag or tape raw edges before starting a large piece.
