What Is FFMI?

Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) measures how much muscle you carry relative to your height, similar in spirit to BMI but built to actually reflect muscularity instead of just total weight. Because two people of the same height and weight can have very different amounts of muscle versus fat, FFMI strips out body fat first and only scores the lean mass that's left.

The version used here is the "normalized" FFMI from the research of Kouri et al. (1995), which adjusts the raw score so it can be compared fairly across different heights — a 5'6" lifter and a 6'4" lifter with the same normalized FFMI carry a proportionally similar amount of muscle for their frame.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter your current weight and height, plus an estimate of your body fat percentage from calipers, a smart scale, DEXA scan, or a visual estimate. Body fat percentage has the biggest effect on accuracy here — if you're not sure of yours, err on the side of a careful visual estimate rather than guessing low.

How We Calculate It

First, we find your fat-free mass: weight × (1 − body fat % ÷ 100). Dividing that by your height in meters squared gives your raw FFMI. Because raw FFMI still varies somewhat with height, we then normalize it: normalized FFMI = raw FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height in meters), which adjusts everyone to a common 1.8m (5'11") reference point.

The classification scale is based on Kouri's original study of competitive bodybuilders, which found that natural (non-steroid-using) athletes almost never exceeded a normalized FFMI of 25, while steroid-using bodybuilders commonly scored above that line. It's become the informal benchmark most lifters use to gauge how close they are to the natural muscularity ceiling:

A Few Notes

Kouri's benchmark data came from male bodybuilders, so the classification table above is best interpreted with that in mind — it doesn't map cleanly onto female physiology, where natural muscularity ceilings sit meaningfully lower. Your result is also only as accurate as your body fat percentage input, and even the better estimation methods (calipers, bioelectrical impedance) can be off by several points. Treat your FFMI as a useful reference for tracking your own progress over time, not a precise scientific measurement or proof of anything about how a physique was built.
