What Is the Cooper Test?

The Cooper test, developed by Dr. Kenneth Cooper in 1968, estimates aerobic fitness from a single, simple measurement: how far you can run in exactly 12 minutes. It remains widely used by coaches, the military, and fitness programs because it needs no equipment beyond a stopwatch and a measured track or course, while still correlating well with lab-measured VO2 max — your body's maximum rate of oxygen consumption during intense exercise, and one of the best available single indicators of cardiovascular fitness.

How We Calculate It

VO2 max (ml/kg/min) = (distance in meters − 504.9) ÷ 44.73. This is Cooper's original regression formula, derived from comparing 12-minute run distances against lab-measured oxygen consumption in his original research.
