The Rule of Thumb Behind This

Lighting designers use a surprisingly simple shortcut for chandelier diameter: add the room's length and width in feet, and use that number as the chandelier's diameter in inches. A 10×14 ft room calls for a roughly 24-inch chandelier; a small 8×10 ft breakfast nook wants something closer to 18 inches. It's a proportion rule, not physics — the point is that the fixture should feel scaled to the room, neither swallowed up by a large space nor overwhelming a small one.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter your room's length and width in feet, plus the ceiling height. If you're sizing a fixture specifically for over a dining table rather than general room lighting, aim for a diameter about 1/2 to 2/3 the width of the table itself instead, and leave at least 12 inches of clearance from the chandelier's edge to the table's edge on every side.

How We Calculate It

Diameter (inches) = room length (ft) + room width (ft). Hanging height (inches) = ceiling height (ft) × 2.5 — this is the height measured from the floor to the bottom of the fixture, which works out to roughly 7 feet for a standard 8-foot ceiling, leaving normal headroom to walk underneath.

A Few Notes

These are proportion guidelines for a typical living room, dining room, or entryway with a standard 8-9 foot ceiling — they get less reliable for unusually shaped rooms, very high or vaulted ceilings, or rooms with major visual obstructions like a large fireplace or staircase nearby. For a room with a ceiling taller than about 10 feet, add roughly 3 inches of extra hanging height for every additional foot beyond 8, rather than scaling the 2.5 multiplier linearly.
