Why a Single Due Date Is Misleading for Dogs

Breeders and first-time owners alike tend to hear "dogs are pregnant for 63 days" and circle one day on the calendar. That number is real, but it is counted from ovulation, not from the day the dogs were put together. A female can accept a male for several days on either side of ovulation, sperm can survive in her reproductive tract for days, and her eggs need another two to three days to mature before they can be fertilized. The result is that a due date counted from mating carries a wide margin of error, and a puppy arriving on day 59 or day 67 can be perfectly normal. This calculator shows the whole window so you are prepared early rather than surprised.

What You Need Before You Start

How the Dates Are Worked Out

From a breeding date, the calculator adds 63 days for the expected due date and shows a whelping window of 58 to 68 days, the normal range cited by the American Kennel Club and the Merck Veterinary Manual. From an ovulation date, it adds 63 days and narrows the window to 61–65 days, reflecting Cornell University's guidance of 63 days plus or minus one to two days when ovulation is known. The milestone rows are counted from the date you enter: a relaxin blood test or ultrasound becomes reliable from about day 25, palpation by an experienced vet works best around days 28–35, and an X-ray to count puppies is worthwhile from about day 45 (fetal skeletons are not visible before roughly day 42–45 and are clearest after day 55). The last row marks when to start taking her rectal temperature twice a day: Cornell notes a drop below 99°F (normal is 100–102.5°F) usually happens within 24 hours of labor.

Example: a first breeding on March 1 gives an expected due date of May 3 (day 63), with a whelping window running from April 28 (day 58) to May 8 (day 68).

When the Number Might Not Hold

Small breeds and very small litters sometimes run a little long, while large litters can come early. Multiple breedings spread over several days widen the true window beyond what any calculator can pin down, and a mating date recorded days before ovulation pushes the real due date later. If she goes past day 68 from breeding (or day 65 from a known ovulation) without signs of labor, if her temperature drops and nothing happens within 24 hours, or if she strains for more than 30–60 minutes without producing a puppy, call your veterinarian. This tool is a planning aid, not a substitute for veterinary care during pregnancy and whelping.
