Half Birthday Calculator
Enter a date of birth to find the half birthday, the next one on the calendar, and how many days are left until it arrives.

Your half birthday is the same day of the month, six calendar months after your birthday — and if that month is too short (a birthday on August 31 has no February 31), it moves back to the last day of that month.
How the Date Is Worked Out
The calculator adds six to your birth month and keeps the day number: born on January 15, your half birthday is July 15; born on October 3, it's April 3. Because some months are shorter than others, a handful of birth dates would land on a day that doesn't exist. The rule used here is the one most calendar tools follow: when the target month has fewer days, the half birthday falls on its final day. So August 29, 30 and 31 all map to February 28 (or February 29 in a leap year), and March 31, May 31, October 31 and December 31 map to the 30th of September, November, April and June respectively. Someone born on February 29 celebrates on August 29 every year, which conveniently avoids the leap-day problem entirely.
There is a second convention some people prefer: counting exactly half a year, 182.5 days, forward from the birthday. That usually lands a day or two away from the calendar version, because the months between your birthday and the half-way mark aren't all the same length. The breakdown table shows both, so you can pick whichever your family celebrates.
Worked Example
Take a birth date of January 15, 2000, with today being September 27, 2026. Six months after January is July, so the half birthday is July 15. This year's July 15 has already passed, so the next one is July 15, 2027 — 291 days away (3 days left in September, 92 in October through December, 181 from January through June, then 15 in July). Counting 182.5 days instead, starting from the January 15, 2027 birthday, gives 182 full days plus half a day, which lands on July 16, 2027, around midday — one day later than the calendar method, because February only has 28 days in 2027. The very first half birthday, the day the baby turned six months old, was July 15, 2000.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a half birthday the same as being six months old? Yes for the first one. A baby's first half birthday is the day they turn six months old by the calendar, which is the date most parents photograph and celebrate. Every later half birthday is simply that same month and day repeated each year.
Why do school kids with summer birthdays celebrate half birthdays? Classes often mark birthdays that fall during summer break on the half birthday instead, since it lands during the school year. A July 4 birthday, for example, becomes a January 4 class celebration.
What if I was born on the 31st? Half the year's months have only 30 days (or fewer), so a 31st birthday shifts to the 30th, or to February 28/29 if you were born on August 31. The calculator applies this automatically.
Limits of the Calculation
Dates are calculated from the calendar date alone, using your device's current date to decide which half birthday is "next". Time of birth and time zones aren't considered, so the 182.5-day version is shown to the nearest day. There is no official rule for half birthdays — they're a social custom — so if your family already uses a different date for an end-of-month birthday, that choice is just as valid as the one here.
