Why Bowling Scoring Isn't Just Addition
A bowling score isn't the sum of pins knocked down — strikes and spares earn bonus pins borrowed from the rolls that come right after them, which is why a single strike can be worth anywhere from 10 to 30 points depending on what follows it. That bonus system is also what makes a "perfect game" worth exactly 300: twelve strikes in a row, where every one of the first nine frames scores the maximum 30 (10 plus two more strikes' worth of bonus), and the 10th frame's three bonus strikes add the final 30.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter every roll of the game in order, separated by commas — not the frame totals, the individual pin counts from each throw. A strike is a single "10", a spare is two rolls that add to 10 (like "7,3"), and an open frame is two rolls that don't. In the 10th frame, a strike or spare earns you one or two extra bonus rolls within that same frame, so a strike there might look like "10,10,10" if you strike out.
How We Calculate It
For frames 1-9: a strike scores 10 plus the next two rolls (which come from the following frame or frames); a spare scores 10 plus the next one roll; an open frame scores the sum of its two rolls. The 10th frame is simply the sum of all rolls made within it (2 or 3, depending on whether you strike or spare), since its bonus rolls are already part of the same frame rather than borrowed from a frame that doesn't exist.
A Few Notes
This calculator checks that your input represents a legal, complete game (each frame's pins can't exceed 10, and the roll count matches a finished 10th frame) — if something doesn't add up, it's usually a miscounted roll rather than a bug in the math. It scores standard ten-pin bowling only; candlepin, duckpin, and five-pin use different pin counts and scoring conventions that this tool doesn't cover.
